She was born in Duluth, MN and lived most of her life in Asheville, NC. Danielle moved to Florida 11 years ago and is a graduate of Florida State College at Jacksonville and is newly engaged.
Danielle has been working as a senior advocate for the past five years. She enjoys studying and delving into psychology, personal development, and spending time in the sunshine. Danielle is looking forward to building up the programs at THE PLAYERS and bringing in fresh new ideas.

Scott started out as a volunteer with the Council On Aging and ended up filling a need in our food service department. Originally from Michigan and raised in Minnesota, he started his love affair with food in his grandmother’s kitchen.
He trained with several renowned chefs in the Midwest and worked in healthcare for the last 25 years. In his leisure time, he enjoys spending time outdoors, reading, and helping others with an emphasis on people in addiction.

The Gift of Mobility!
Volunteers from Council On Aging and the South Ponte Vedra Civic Association recently worked together to build a ramp and gave the gift of mobility to a 73-year-old lady who is confined to a wheelchair.Prior to the ramp being built, she had to be carried up and down her steps every time she needed to go out.
There are many seniors in our community who could benefit from a ramp. Our Care Connection is actively looking for partners for these projects. Would your company, church, school, club, community, and others be able to help? The average cost is $1,000.00 per ramp and we also need volunteers to construct the ramp. On the 26th anniversary of “Make a Difference Day”, Council on Aging will partner with Awaken City Church to help community seniors in St Johns County. This national day of community service connects people with opportunities to serve, increases the strength of communities, and promotes civic engagement.
Through “Make a Difference Day”, Council on Aging and Awaken City Church are joining hundreds of other organizations around the country that are engaging their community in service.
“One of the greatest things we can do is to help those in need,” said Pastor Billy Almaguer, of Awaken City Church. “With the aftermath of Hurricane Irma many of the elderly citizens in our community still need assistance. On October 28th, we get to mobilize as a community of volunteers and Make a Difference.”
Awaken City Church will make a difference by providing volunteers who will lay paver bricks to make the Council on Aging Memorial Garden wheelchair accessible, painting, yard work, and other tasks. By coming together to address a need caused by Hurricane Irma, these organizations are building a stronger, more vibrant community. This will lead to a higher quality of life for not only seniors, but all of St Johns County residents.
Council on Aging Hosts Christmas on the River
Join us on Sunday, November 19th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. when the Council on Aging (COA) hosts “Christmas on the River.”
This year’s theme will be “A Worldwide Journey of Wine Tasting & Gift Giving from the Heart.” This event is a delightful kickoff to the holiday season that includes a festival of wreaths and other decorations, wine tastings and fair trade items from Amistad, delicious food, and seasonal music.
All proceeds benefit Care Connection services. Care Connection is our crisis mitigation for seniors with emergency needs for which there is no other funding source. This year, because of Hurricane Irma, we anticipate a greater need than ever before to help displaced elders who are trying to return to their homes after flooding.
“It is absolutely crucial that we are able to provide these essential in-home services to our seniors,” Becky Yanni, Executive Director, said. “I can’t think of a better way to bring the community together around the holiday season to support such a worthy cause!”
Council on Aging is in search of donations of Christmas wreaths and small trees. These decorations should be made with silk or dried materials and delivered to COA on or before November 3rd.

Each checkup takes about 20 minutes- this is not a driving test or mechanical inspection.

COA Staff Works at Emergency Operations Center & Transport Evacuees
Meals On Wheels Uninterrupted
Last week, our kitchen staff and administration worked tirelessly to help provide meals for the Emergency Operations Center officials and staff during and after HurIt’sane Irma. It’s our understanding that some people ended up spending the night at the EOC!
The COA bus drivers and paratransit staff worked to transport people without transportation and those with special needs to shelters before the storm, to life-saving kidney dialysis treatments, and then back home again after the storm.
Meals on Wheels meals were provided through Tuesday before the storm and after the storm meal service was uninterrupted.
Our Council On Aging is quite the operation on a “normal” day and even more so during a crisis. We are so proud of our dedicated and exemplary staff.

Congratulations to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office for receiving the Service to Seniors by an Organization Award at the 2017 Florida Conference on Aging in Orlando on Tuesday! Executive Director Becky Yanni from the COA nominated SJSO for their service and the award was sponsored by FPL.
The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office (SJSO) Community Affairs Unit is committed to serving the community and works closely with St. Johns County residents through various initiatives and programs. The Safe-Trak and the Community and Advocacy Resources for the Elderly (C.A.R.E.) programs are two of their initiatives that help support seniors in St. Johns County.
The Safe-Trak program is designed for seniors diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or other dementias. The program helps to facilitate the purchase, caregiver training and on-going maintenance of a radio frequency tracking device to assist in the recovery of the participant should they become lost. SJSO Deputies and other personnel are trained and certified to track through educational and practical components.
The C.A.R.E. program provides several key services to our elderly population. Two SJSO staff members coordinate referrals for need-based services and facilitate connectivity with seniors and foster a more open dialogue between law enforcement and other social services. These staff members along with trained volunteers provide weekly or bi-weekly in-home visitation for elderly individuals who have no local family or who live alone. Staff members respond to reports of elder abuse and exploitation, often preventing further harm to the individual. The Community Affairs Unit also provides crime prevention presentations at senior centers and senior facilities throughout the community.
The Sheriff’s Office is an active member of SPIN, the local senior services networking group, and has been instrumental in helping to organize initiatives that offer medical alert systems and home lock boxes for seniors living alone and at risk for falls.
Sheriff’s Office staff time devoted to these programs is over 2,000 hours and volunteer hours total more than 1000 hours each year.

The Care Connection Caught in the Act!
Ken Leach, the husband of our volunteer coordinator, Amy Leach was working with another volunteer Don Porter to do a minor home repair for our client. The metal was peeling away from the house allowing rain water to seep inside of the walls. So, Ken & Don repaired the metal to correct the problem!

Grant from Meals on Wheels America Supports Clients with Pets!
The COA Council On Aging has received a $1,500 grant from Meals on Wheels America to support our client pet support program! Funding will be used to provide food, supplies and care for area clients with pets!
Becky Yanni, Executive Director of the St. Johns County Council on Aging said “For home bound elders, pets can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and increase healthy physical activity. Most importantly, pets become a member of the family, providing love and companionship. We are so pleased to be able to offer assistance to our home bound elders to allow them to keep their “family” together.”
This generous award will help our Meals on Wheels program continue to serve over 50 pets currently receiving food on a monthly basis. Combining this financial support with the generous donations received from the St. Johns Veterinary Hospital, MuraBella Animal Hospital, and Bartram Trail Veterinary Hospital will give us the ability to provide a greater amount of food each month to our existing clients as well as insure that we are able to provide pet food to any new Meals on Wheels clients.

Powder House Lot Historical Native Plant Garden Gets a New Walkway!
Bob Long believed in giving back to the community. Bob recently passed away at the age of 100 and was an active community volunteer for many years. His spirit of community service was evident this past Monday when many of his children, grandchildren, and even a couple of great grandkids, gathered to work on a project in his honor and memory, in a garden at the Council on Aging (COA) Coastal Community Center, a collaboration of the COA and the Florida Native Plant Society (FNPS) Sea Oats Chapter. A handicap accessible walkway was built with pavers generously donated by Southern Horticulture and Stone Plus.
Eleven members of the Long family donated time, energy, and a lot of sweat to lay down the pavers. Although they had no prior experience, they quickly became pros, and the result is a fantastic beginning for this effort.

Love is in the Air at the COA!
Angelina Giardino, 77 years young, moved here to live with her daughter from Puerto Rico in January of 2016 and joined the community center in February. Nick Fiore, 82 years young, started at the community center in December of 2016.
For Nick, it was love at first sight when he met Angelina. They both had the same circle of friends and would meet at the center for dominoes, Spanish class, and many more of our daily activities.
By February of 2017, love was in the air! Angelina and Nick were the talk of the center. They made their relationship public and were inseparable.
Plans for the wedding are already underway, and the happy couple is looking at late summer or early fall for wedding dates.
We hope that this love story inspires others! Love is possible at any age!

Caregiver 101 classes for Caregivers of Persons with Dementia
If your loved one has been diagnosed with dementia – this course will provide you with a great deal of beneficial knowledge. Learning about the special care needs that are involved with this specialized care helps make the caregiver feel more confident and empowers them to give the best care to their loved one as possible as well as to themselves.
Caregiving can be an isolating experience. Attending classes allows the caregiver to talk to experts in the field as well as provide the opportunity to socialize with others facing similar experiences. Caregiving does not need to be a lonely experience. Best of all, classes are free and are held one Tuesday afternoon a month at 2 locations: 180 Marine St., St. Augustine 32084 and 1048 A1A N, Ponte Vedra Beach FL, 32082.
The Florida Department of Financial Services and State Representative Cyndi Stevenson will be hosting an Insurance – Disaster Workshop at the Saint Johns County Board of County Commission Auditorium next Wednesday, June 21, 2017.
This workshop will offer valuable information on financially preparing for a disaster, ensuring that you have adequate insurance coverage and questions to ask your insurance agent. This is especially beneficial as we are still in recovery from Hurricane Matthew and just began the 2017 Hurricane Season.

A driver improvement course can help senior drivers keep driving knowledge fresh and get the most out of your vehicle, while reducing risk to you, your passengers and others on the road.

The class will be held at River House, 179 Marine Street, on Tuesday, June 20, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (30 min lunch break).

An important component of the Community Health Assessment process, a community-wide survey will be conducted throughout May and June. This is an opportunity for St. Johns residents to share their opinions about health and the quality of life in the county.

Older Americans Month
Historically, Older Americans Month has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country, in particular, those who defended our country. Every President since Kennedy has issued a formal proclamation during or before the month of May asking that the entire nation pay tribute in some way to older persons in their communities. Older Americans Month is celebrated across the country through ceremonies, events, fairs, and other such activities.
Online registration is now open for the Caregiver Expo 2017 on Saturday, May 13th at The Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront Hotel from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm.
The free event, now in its sixth year, is a day of pampering, learning and fun for all First Coast caregivers. It includes more than 100 community exhibitors offering information, prizes and valuable services, no-cost health screenings and personal care services such as hair care and massage, free samples from area restaurants, and complimentary on-site respite care on request.
The event is hosted by the Caregiver Coalition of Northeast Florida, a program of Community Hospice & Palliative Care, and is presented by AARP.

COA EXPANDS ADULT DAY CARE SERVICES
The Council on Aging is thrilled to announce the opening of the Ponte Vedra Adult Day Care Center, located at 1048 A1A North in Ponte Vedra Beach. (adjacent to the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall). The Ponte Vedra Adult Day Care Center joins the Sunshine Center, 179 Marine St. in downtown St. Augustine to offer licensed, adult day care in St. Johns County under the direction of the Council on Aging.
With over 4,000 people in St. Johns County dealing with the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, providing professional, compassionate care is a priority and COA has taken the lead in addressing this issue.
